Is the Doge's Palace Worth It?
Is the Doge's Palace worth it? Who should go, who can skip it, what the same rooms cost with MUVE's ticket, a booking-site ticket or a guide, and what visitors say.
For a first visit to Venice, yes, if you have a few hours and can manage stairs. The Doge’s Palace was the seat of the Venetian Republic’s government, and MUVE’s St. Mark’s Square Museums ticket, 35 EUR standard (at the ticket office, or online within 30 days) or 30 EUR online at least 30 days ahead, takes you through its council chambers, the Doge’s Apartments, the Armoury, the Picture Gallery and the Prisons, across the Bridge of Sighs, and into three more museums on the square (MUVE, checked November 2026). You can skip it if the Basilica or the Bridge of Sighs from outside is all you came for, or if an hour is all you have.
What the visit is

The regular route starts at the Museo dell’Opera, crosses the courtyard and climbs to the loggia and the Doge’s Apartments on the first floor, then the institutional chambers on the first and second floors, the Armoury and the Picture Gallery. It ends with the Prisons, reached across the Bridge of Sighs, and you leave by the Porta della Carta. Each ticket gives one entry, and MUVE’s app audio guide comes with its ticket, in six languages (all MUVE, checked November 2026).
Who can skip it
If St Mark’s Basilica is what you came for, the palace ticket does not include it: the Basilica has its own ticket, which tickets with St Mark’s Basilica explains. If you want the Bridge of Sighs for a photograph, the outside of it is free from the waterfront. If you have an hour in Venice, the palace is a poor fit: one entry per ticket, a long route, and three more museums on the same ticket that close earlier.
If stairs are a problem, think about which part you would miss. MUVE says the Prisons, the Armoury and the Secret Itineraries are not accessible, though the rest of the regular route is, so a wheelchair user can see the council chambers but not cross the Bridge of Sighs from inside. A review of the ticket from 19 October 2026 says to be prepared for lots of stairs.
Who should go
Anyone curious about how Venice governed itself: much of the route is the institutional chambers on the first and second floors, where the Republic’s councils sat, and the visit ends in the New Prisons. Painting lovers get the Picture Gallery and the painted halls themselves. One thing to know before you go: MUVE’s visitor page notes that Veronese’s Rape of Europa and Bassano’s Jacob’s Return to Canaan are being restored, with copies in their place and the Veronese restoration open to view in the Liagò (checked November 2026).
The same rooms, three ways to pay
| Way in | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| MUVE’s own ticket | 35 EUR standard (at the ticket office, or online within 30 days), 30 EUR online at least 30 days ahead | The palace, the Correr, the Archaeological Museum and the Marciana rooms, with MUVE’s app audio guide |
| Venice: Doge's Palace Reserved Entry Ticket (Venezia Unica by Vela Spa) | From $39 | The same museums on a date you pick, entry from 12:00 PM, non-refundable |
| Doge’s Palace, New Prisons & St. Mark’s Basilica Guided Tour (Crown Tours) | From $110; the 2-hour option read US$99.20 | A local guide through the palace and the New Prisons, then St Mark’s Basilica |
MUVE prices and booking-site prices (checked November 2026). Treat the booking-site figures as the shape of the market, not a quote.
The difference between the first two is mostly when you go in; the difference between those and the third is a guide and the Basilica. MUVE also sells the Secret Itineraries tour at 40 EUR, for the rooms the regular route leaves out.
What visitors of the ticket wrote
Of the 350 reviews of the reserved-entry ticket that were posted from 8 October to 7 November 2026, 262 give five stars and 36 give three or fewer. One of 4 November found it “too much to absorb in one visit”. One of 21 October, four stars, says the palace “is crowded, it is big and it takes much time to normally see everything”, and that there was not time for all the museums on the ticket in one day with entry from 12:00 and closing at 6:00 PM. Another review of the same day says the afternoon has fewer people.
Where it is

The palace stands on the Piazzetta San Marco, beside St Mark’s Basilica, with its public entrance at the Porta del Frumento. San Zaccaria Danieli is the nearest water-bus stop, 237 m on foot. How long the Doge’s Palace takes has the hours and the last admission, and a guided tour or an audio guide compares the ways to have the rooms explained.
